But this translation does not do justice to the importance of this unique, fantastic form. Hidden inside their structure are true fighting principles that make Wing Chun so effective.
Therefore, the request to the practitioners to achieve real combat principles, they must consider the Siu Lim Tao techniques as a template for these principles. The application of correct combat principles from the Siu Lim Tao has the consequence that the technique can flow naturally and uninhibitedly in accordance with the actions of the opponent. Without this basic understanding, the practitioner would lack the essence of this form. He would be doomed to practice empty movements, far from the attainment of the potential (power) that this art brings with it.
After a while, this form is trained with a focus on correct breathing.
The even more advanced exercises the form meditatively and strengthens his gong lik (inner strength).
This form should be practiced daily taking into account the following points.
Learn one technique after another, movement for movement as taught by your Sifu. Make it a habit to put your body parts in the right position. Every position must be clear and unambiguous, remain in every position, every movement must be smooth, even and powerful. Coordinate and check the stand, arms and eyes. Do not move the body, only the arms. Use the diaphragm breathing. Hold your head up and relax the neck muscles.
The Siu Lim Tao is learned in three phases.
1. correct positions and paths
2. Power and energy control
3. short movements (economy of movement)
The execution and implementation of the movements can change from phase to phase!
Other exercise methods are
Time Form - this is an exercise in which the individual positions are held variably for 1-3 minutes under tension. Time Form trains the muscles, the right stand, the diaphragm breathing, meditation.
Form on one leg, on plum blossom wooden posts or blindfolded - this form of training also serves to strengthen the leg muscles and balance sense.
